What is the purpose of the data protection act?
To protect personal data from misuse.
What is considered misuse of data?
using it for any other purpose to the reason why it was collected
using incorrect personal data
theft of data for fraudulent purposes
collecting excessive amounts of personal data that is unnecessary
keeping data for no purpose
How is data protected?
testing software for security issues
user access permissions
encryption
kept up to date
unnecessary data deleted
data stored in the cloud instead of physical devices that can be lost
What is the purpose of the computer misuse act?
Prevent unauthorised access and hacking of computer systems.
What are prohibited actions in the computer misuse act and their punishments?
unauthorised access to computer system 2 yrs
intent to commit further offence 5 yrs
creating risk of serious damage 10 yrs
making tools that can be used for hacking 2 yrs
What is the purpose of the copyright and patents act?
Enables people to make a living of digital work by controlling who can use their creative work and charging licenses for their work.
What does this mean?
any media is automatically copyrighted unless otherwise
patents to protect inventions have to be applied for
What actions are prohibited?
selling someone’s work
distribution/use without permission or purchase
What is the purpose of the regulation of investigatory powers act?
Governs the use of hidden surveillance by public bodies and organisations.
What does RIPA state?
ISP’s must fit equipment to facilitate surveillance
ISP’s must provide access to customers’ communications
chat monitoring/interception is allowed for crime prevention
authorised only when deemed necessary and proportionate
What are morals vs ethics?
Morals are personal beliefs about what is right and wrong whereas ethics is societal beliefs.
What is culture?
The way in which a group of people do things.
