5.1 - Biodiversity Flashcards
what is biodiversity?
variety of life in an area that is determined by the number of different species in it
what does biodiversity increase and contribute to?
it increases the stability of an ecosystem and contributes to the health of the biosphere
what is genetic diversity?
the variety of genes or inheritable characteristics that are present in a population
what does genetic diversity increase?
it increases the chances a species will survive during changing environmental conditions
what is species diversity?
the number of different species in a biological community
what is ecosystem diversity?
the variety of ecosystems that are present in an environment
what is an ecosystem made up of?
of interacting populations and and the abiotic factors that support them
what are three types of biodiversity?
ecosystem, genetic and species
what is an ecosystem made up of?
interacting populations
what do wild species serve as?
as reservoirs of desirable genetic traits
why is biodiversity important?
to keep ecosystem functions diverse and functioning
what are the direct values of biodiversity?
economic values, such as food crops, we depend on plants and animals for food and clothing
what are the indirect values of biodiversity?
things humans cannot create such as oxygen, and drinking water
