5.1 Flashcards
CNS is made up of the
Brain and spinal cord
PNS is made up of the
Nerves and receptors
Stimuli are the
changes in the environment
Stimuli are detected by
receptors
Receptors send impulses along
sensory neurones to the CNS
At the CNS, the information is processed and the
response is coordinated
Impulses are sent along
motor neurones to effectors (muscles, glands) to bring about a response
Neurones are
the cells in the nervous system that carry nerve impulses
Neurones have a cell body containing a
nucleus
mitochondria
ribosomes
ER
Dendrites are extensions of the cell body and have
a large surface area to receive nerve impulses which they pass on to the cell body
The axon is a single, long projection from the cell body that carries nerve impulses
away from the cell body
The axon of many neurones is surrounded by
Schwann cells
Schwann cells grow in circles around the axon - as they do this, the cytoplasm of the Schwann cell is squeezed into a very thin layer - the cell forms a fatty protection around the axon called the
Myelin sheath
Sensory neurones carry nerve impulses from
receptors to the CNS
SN - have many dendrites that join together to form a single long dendron that brings the impulse towards the cell body, and along axon that carries
nerve impulses away from the cell body
