What was the significance of the Church?
Due to the central governments of Europe being weak, the Church was the most important force in unifying European society.
What did an early pope believe?
He beloved God made two areas of influence in the world which were political and religious.
Who was in charge of spiritual matters?
The pope
Who was in charge of political affairs?
The emperor and other rulers
What did popes often try to do?
They tried to influence the actions and decisions of rulers who clashed with them in struggles for power.

Pope- Head of the Church
Bishops- Oversaw all the priests in a large area
Priests- Led services at local churches
What was the Middle Ages?
An age of faith
What happened during the Middle Ages?
-People were bound together by their belief in God and the teachings of the Church.
-Even through the tough times, Christians hoped for salvation—eternal life in heaven
-One way to achieve that was through the sacraments
