What were the UI’s aims?
- Equal voting rights for Catholics

What religions were involved with the United Irishmen?
Protestant AND Catholics
How did the UI think their goal would be achieved by?
With a union between Catholics and Protestant radicals to challenge the conservatism that governed Ireland
When was the first society established?
1791
What did the 1794 manifesto outline?
- IRL would be divided into 300 parliamentary constituencies (equal in population)
- every man should have a vote
- Catholic emancipation (as Catholics were not allowed to stand for parliament)
- Better representation for the Irish population which was predominantly of that faith
Why was Britain resistant to extending further powers?
Because of the 1773 French revolution
What had the reluctance of the British lead to?
Forced the UI to adopt more aggressive tactics which were encouraged by the AR and FR examples
How many mebers did the UI have in 1797
They were able to attract strong numbers of 200,000+
When did Tone try to organise another rebellion?
1798
Was the 1798 rebellion successful?
Uprising not executed well.
Had 15,000 fighting men BUT rebellion was poorly coordinated.
They were unsuccessful taking cities, confined to countrysides
How did Britain defeat the UI?
Able to secure a victory by bringing 20,000 men and of the UI’s disorganisation.
How had France failed to support the UI during the 1798 uprising?
Failure of immediate French support. The French regime targeted Egypt so their priorities were overseas and did not send troops immediately
How did the UI 1798 uprising result in? Was it successful?
Drew the country closer to Britain.
