How was Parnell at an advantage?
Had a strong family name and personal charisma which won him friends in parliament.
He had links with Britain (Tudor decedent), America (mother Irish-American) and Ireland

Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP) 1882
How was the IPP different to the HRL?
The party was more tightly structured organisation, where the party had to vote and act as told by Parnell
How many IPP members were in the parliament?
1885 86/103, which gave significant leverage within parliament
What PM was wiling to pass the home rule bill?
Gladstone
What was Gladstone proposed in 1886?
Grant a new parliament to Ireland that would take responsibility for all domestic affairs- but still a member of British Empire

What were Parnell’s views on the bill?
Recognised limitations of proposal, HOWEVER, was aware bill was opportunity to secure a significant improvement of current situation
Who was the Bill opposed by? What did it result in?
Conservative party. They voted where 341 opposed and 331 in favour = defeat
What happened to Parnell?
Got exposed with murders in 1887 The Times newspaper, revealed affair with O’Sheas wife which resulted in divorce = very bad for Christians.
