5 Principles Of Development Flashcards
Define development occurs in a predictable and orderly way and give an example
Many aspects of development occur in predictable, orderly patterns and many aspects of human development require other skills in order to occur.
Example: most infants learn to walk at 9 to 15 months
Define development is continual and give an example
Development starts with conception and ends with death.
Example: decline in systems and memory are also part of the development process.
Define there are individual variations in the rate and timing of development and give an example
There are different variations in when milestones are reached and how developed one person is compared to another of the same age
Example: hormones, genetics, nutrition and physical activity
Define development follows predictable patterns and give an example
Growth and motor skill development follow patterns that are observable in all people. Cephalocaudal and proximodistal patterns are evident in prenatal, infant and childhood stages.
Example:
Cephalocaudal is development from head down
Proximodistal is development in the centre of body in an outward direction
Define development proceeds from the simple to the complex and give an example
Thought processes and motor skill development go from simple to complex. Once simple skills are established, they are built on to make them more complex
Example: infants think in a concrete way but as they develop, abstract thought develops
