5. Ionic Compounds Flashcards
What are the three types of chemical bonds?
Ionic bonds.
Covalent bonds.
Metallic bonds.
What are atoms that have gained or lost electrons called?
Ions
Everything you need to know about Ionic Bonding:
~Ions have a complete outer shell of electrons.
~It involves a transfer of electrons from metal to non-metal atoms.
~The metal atoms lose electrons to become positively charged ions.
~The non-metal atoms gain elections to become negatively charged ions.
Everything you need to know about Ionic Compounds:
~They are giant structures of ions.
~They have high melting and boiling points.
~They DO NOT conduct electricity when solids because the ions cannot move.
~They DO conduct electricity when molten because the charged ions are free to move.
