2. Atoms And The Periodic Table Flashcards
Scientific models of the atoms & THE PLUM PUDDING
In early models, it was thought that atoms were tiny spheres that could not be divided. However, Thomson discovered that they had to be changed. Overall, an atom is neutral meaning it has no charge. But
Thomson thought tiny atoms contained electrons surrounded by positive charge . This was called the PLUM PUDDING.
Subatomic Particles
Atoms have an equal number of PROTONS and ELECTRONS.
The number of protons in an atom is the ATOMIC NUMBER.
To find the neutrons you do:
Mass Number - Atomic Number
Isotopes and Ions
Atoms can gain or lose electrons to become IONS.
Metal atoms lose electrons to form positive ions.
Non - a Metal atoms gain electrons to form negative ions.
