5 How is this Sedimentary rock formed? Flashcards
Sandstone
Composed of sand particles between 0.5 and 2 mm in diameter. Predominant mineral is quartz. Often, cream or white in colour but can be reddish due to iron.
Clastic sedimentary rock
Shale
Fine grained, clastic, sedimentary, rock, composed of flakes of clay minerals, and tiny fragments of others, especially quartz and calcite. Characterised by thin, parallel layering of bedding panels, less than 1 cm and thickness and can break into thin layers. Cleavage.
Conglomerate
clastic sedimentary rocks containing relatively large clasts. Plus are well rounded and spherical. Poorly sorted. From calm environments.
Hoe does Claystone form
Result of deposition close to shore line with vitamin being carried into deeper water. Argillaceous meaning, very fine grained.
Mudstone
Similar to claystone, except made of clay, silt, and other materials. at least one 3rd of grains are silt size and one third are clay sized particles.
Siltstone
Similar to mudstone, except more than 2/3 is composed of salt size particles, with the remainder clay sized.
Limestone
Non-clastic and deposited in warm, shallow, calm, marine environments where marine organisms can form shells and skeletons. When these marine organisms die their shells and skeletons fall to the ground, providing fossiliferous limestone if not fully abraded. Known as biological, sedimentary rocks.
Evaporites
Chemically, precipitated rocks formed from evaporation of saline water. Can only form in specialise conditions where C or salt lakes are completely absent of clastic sedimentary, and in a arid, hot climate, allowing for substantial evaporation.
Stromatolites
Oreganosedimentary rock made by physical processes and microorganisms like cyanobacteria.
