What is dysthymia?
disorder is characterized by chronic low mood
How is the Dx of major depression made?
If a pt has 5 or more Sx during the same 2-wk interval with at least one of the Sx being either depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure in activities that were previously pleasurable
What is double depression?
major depression combined with dysthymia - these pts had sharply higher rates of hopelesseness than pts with just one of the illnesses
What is a significant risk factor for depression?
the living environment of the pt
What living environment has a higher incidence of depression?
living at home (generally alone) has a higher incidence than nursing homes
What is a risk factor for depressive disorders?
chronic diseases: smoking, obesity, impoverished, received Dx of DM/heart dz/stroke, declien in physical activity over a 3y period
How do serotonin-specific reuptake play a role in depression and ACS?
They have a protective affect for ACS and depression. They are thought to inhibit platelet activity which may protect the heart independent of its use as antidepressant.
How are depression and suicide rates different in elderly than younger adults?
depression rates are lower in the elderly, but suicide rates are higher in the elderly
