5. Cyberbullying Flashcards
Studies suggest that individuals who are victims of cyberbullying are often targets of _________ as well
traditional bullying
(Juvoven & Gross, 2008) found that as many as ________ of children and teens who were victimised electronically were also bullied at school
85%
(Schacter, Greenberg, & Juvonen, 2016) has suggested that
over-sharing of personal information or emotions may lead one to blame a victim of cyberbullying rather than feel for them
the majority of resources aimed at preventing cyberbullying are targeted at
school-aged children, youth, and their carers or teachers
Some severe forms of cyberbullying or online abuse can take place in the forms of:
Cyberstalking– technology-facilitated stalking and harassment
Sexting - producing and/or sending provocative or sexual messages, images or videos
Revenge porn – sharing intimate photos or videos without consent with the intent to humiliate, shame someone or control someone
A recent review (Nixon, 2014) of studies examining the effect of cyberbullying on adolescent health identified a number of factors associated with both victimisation and perpetration. Specifically, victims of cyberbullying were found to be more likely to
report greater levels of anxiety, loneliness, somatic symptoms (e.g., headaches, stomachaches) and suicide ideation
Nixon, 2014 also found that perpetration of cyberbullying was associated with
increased delinquent behaviours, substance abuse and aggression
Nixon’s review also included studies that had examined characteristics of adolescents who were both victims and perpetrators of cyberbullying, and found that they experienced
some of the most adverse health outcomes
Nixon’s review also found that Compared to their peers who reported only victimisation or perpetration, adolescents who reported both roles also reported
poorer relationships with caregivers, conduct problems, and greater levels of depression and substance use
most of the studies that have explored the relationship between cyberbullying and health are
correlational
