5 Components of Fitness Flashcards
What are the 5 component of health-related fitness?
- Muscle strength
- Muscle endurance
- Cardiovascular endurance
- Flexibility
- Body composition
Define muscular strength
The amount of force a muscle can produce at maximal effort
Define range of motion (ROM)
The degrees through which a joint can move
Muscular strength examples:
Bench press, leg press, squats or the fitness gram push up test
Define muscular endurance
The ability of the muscle to perform continuously without fatiguing at sub-maximal force.
Muscular endurance examples:
Cycling, step machine, elliptical machines, or the fitness gram sit up test
Define cardiovascular endurance
Cardiovascular endurance is the ability of the heart and lungs to work together to provide the needed oxygen and fuel to the body during sustained workloads
Cardiovascular endurance examples:
Jogging, cycling, swimming or the fitness gram pacer
Define flexibility
The ability to move a join through its complete ROM (range of motion)
Flexibility examples:
Stretching individual muscles, the ability to perform certain functional movements such as the lunge, warm up and cool down, or the fitness gram sit and reach test
Define body composition
The amount of lean body mass (bone, muscle, organs, and body fluids) compared with the amount of body fat
Define BMI
Stands for “body mass index” and is an indirect measure of body composition based on height and weight
Ways to measure body composition:
Underwater weighing, skinfold readings or air displacement pods
Health is a _______ pursuit. It is impossible to store _______ once it is developed
Lifetime, fitness
A healthy BMI range for adult ______ is 15-18% and for adult ______ is 22-25%
