4.Volcanic hazards responses Flashcards
Short term responses
Include things such as evacuating people and providing emergency food supplies most common
Long term responses
Prevention- impossible to prevent but possible to prevent eruptions posing a risk eg authorities can prevent land being built around volcanoes
Preparedness- Can install monitoring systems to predict when eruption can occur, make plans for evacuation
Can stop people entering area around volcano if explosion is imminent
Individuals can make preps eg making emergency kits or finding out where closest emergency shelter is
Communities can set up search and rescue teams
Adaption/mitigation- buildings can be strengthened to reduce chance of a collapse
People can capitalise on opportunities of living near a volcano eg farming (fertile soil)
Physical actions to reduce impacts
Once viscous lava starts to flow may be possible to divert it away from the built environment eg digging trenches and dropping blocks into lava stream
Pour seawater on the front of a Lava flow to solidify it
Barriers have been built across valleys to protect settlements
