4th station - Stomach Flashcards

1
Q

What types of digestions does the stomach contain?

A

Physical: Churning action of the stomach: Break food in bolus into even smaller pieces

Q

How does chyme form?

A

The stomach receives bolus from oesophagus. Due to the churning action of the stomach, the bolus is mixed with gastric juice, forming chyme. Chyme will then be passed into the duedenum

Q

What are the opening and ending of the stomach and their function?

A

Cardiac sphincter: prevent chyme from flowing back to theoesophagus ;Malfunctioning of cardiac sphincter may lead to heartburn reflux
Pyloric sphincter: release food into the duedenum

Q

What does gastric juice contain?

A

Hydrochloric acid:

  1. to kill bacteria or any other pathogenic microorganisms in ingested food
  2. to provide an optimum pH environment for pepsin to work
  3. however, it stops the action of salivary amylase

Pepsin: to digest protein into peptides

Mucus:

  1. protect the stomach from self-digesting by the act of pepsin
  2. to prevent the hydrochloric acid from irritating the wall of the stomach
