4c.4 costal conveyer belts Flashcards
Spits
Often found at a river estuaries - longshore drift transports
sediment into the river mouth, forming sandbank
Spits
- Alluvium builds up behind the sandbank - a marsh
- Hurst Spit extends 1.4 miles into Solent/English Channel.
Spits
-Most other spits will form at the mouths of rivers (which do
not allow sediment to reach other headland)
- Local wind or river currents curve the hook of the spit
recurved spits
Bars
Often found in small bays - sand is pushed by long shore drift to
form a bank of sediment that joins the headlands together
to form a bar / barrier beach
Bars
Former bay now cut off from sea to form a lagoon
(Slapton Ley).
- Key difference is lack of a high energy river - that would
otherwise cut through it - leaving a spit.
Tombolo
Only form when a spit joins an offshore island.
