4C attachment and emotional development Flashcards
attachment
the long-lasting emotional bonds between two individuals.
Attachment theory is interested in
how attachments are formed between infants and their caregivers and how this influences later emotional development.
Emotional development is the
continuous development of skills that allow individuals to control, express and recognise emotions in an appropriate way.
what influences attachment?
GENETICS infants and parents will share certain characteristics which will make them more responsive to each other.
TEMPERAMENT infants with ‘easy’ temperaments are friendlier and more likely to form secure attachments.
EXPERIENCES exposure to positive or negative can impact attachment, though not necessarily permanent
if a healthy attachment is formed…
infants will be more likely to apply this internal working model to future relationships, such as being able to develop a trusting and loving romantic relationship as an adult
to form a healthy attachment (as stated by John Bowlby)…
- the caregiver must consistently meet the needs of the child, especially when they are distressed
- the caregiver and child must interact in an enjoyable manner
an infant with a healthy/secure attachment to the caregiver…
will be able to leave the caregiver, explore the environment and return to the caregiver who acts as a secure base.
