4_Physical/Chemical Properties Flashcards
Physical Properties
Describes the characteristics of a substance.
Can be determined w/o changing its composition
What is the difference between qualitative physical properties and quantitative physical properties?
Qualitative- descriptive
Quantitative- measurable
Define lustre, clarity, brittleness, malleability, ductility, hardness, and solubility. Identify whether they are qualitative or quantitative properties.
Lustre- ability to reflect light | quality
Clarity- transparency | quality
Brittleness- ability to break/shatter | quality
Malleability- ability for a metal to hammered into a sheet | quality
Ductility- ability to be stretched | quality
Hardness- how much a substance can resist scratches/dents | quantity
Solubility- ability to dilute/dissolve in a solvent
Density Formula
d = mass/volume
Chemical Property
A substance’s ability undergo change in composition, producing 1 or more new substances.
Identify and define the 6 chemical properties.
- reactivity w water - ability to react to water
- reactivity w oxygen - ability to reach to oxygen (e.g. rust over long periods of exposure)
- reactivity w acid
- combustibility - ability to burn in air 5. stability - ability to remain unchanged
- toxicity - ability to cause harm to plants and animals
