Q

How can humans affect flooding the river Eden?

A

Human weathering- bad drainage systems and sewers can not keep up with the amount of water and damage being done which makes the flooding even worse.
Physical factors- excessive rainfall makes it very hard for the drainage systems to be able to handle

Q

Why is river flood increasing?

A

River flood is increasing due to climate change, this means that the whole globe is heating up from mainly greenhouse gases as they trap heat in the atmosphere and eventually and gradually melt the ice. As the ice melts, water is produced which continues to make the sea levels rise and create a higher risk of flooding.

Q

Soft engineering vs hard engineering

A

Soft engineering: These are less expensive then hard engineering. Usually more long term and sustainable with less impact on the environment.
Hard engineering: This is usually to prevent something initially and unexpectedly. It can be more expensive; however works efficiently

Q

Examples of soft engineering.

A

Dredging:
Not clearly visible, and doesn’t cost a lot. Needs to be dredged annually for it to be efficient.

Levees:
Not attractive, however are expensive. Prevents the overflowing of the river well. Flash floods are apparent when using levees as sudden floods occur
