What is the definition of “sustainable development”?
development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
What is a “circular economy”?
Based on three principles:
- Designing out waste and pollution in economic activity
- Keeping products and materials in use
- Regenerating natural systems.
What are “SDGs”?
In 2015, the United Nations adopted a set of 17 ambitious goals to meet by 2030. These are called the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
How come poverty threatens sustainability?
Often, where there is poverty, public resource and waste management systems are non-existent or do not work well.
–> Higher deforestation, land degradation and pollution of ecosystems
How can economic growth NOT lead to economic development?
- Skewed income distribution
–> Prevents the benefits of economic growth from being experienced by the majority - Environmental damage
–> over-exploitation of resources and unmanaged waste can lower the quality of life for the world’s poorest
(think negative externalities of production!)
