What is the DRC’s HDI?
The human development index is a composite measure which measures the achievement in key dimensions of human development;
- Long and healthy life

What is the 1st SDG?
(extreme poverty)
Eradicate extreme poverty by 2030.
Proportion of population earning less than $2.15 per day (extreme poverty as defined by the UN)
Today still 1/6 people living in Sub Saharan-Africa and in extreme poverty, live in the DRC. Therefore, it’s very unlikely that extreme poverty will be eradicated by 2030 in the DRC.
What is the 5th SDG?
(gender equality)
Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
Women married before 15y old
2007: 40%
2018: 30%
Far behind on goal in eradicating child marriages, difficult to change culture.
What is the 7th SDG?
(energy)
Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
Share of population with access to electricity increased:
2000 - 6.7%
2020 -19.1%
Small increase and still less than ⅕ of DRC’s population has access to electricity. So it’s very unlikely that this goal will be met.
What is the 13th SDG?

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
People being displaced within the DRC due to natural disasters has increased in recent years:
2017 - 27,000

This shows that the DRC has failed to adapt to climate-related hazard and natural disasters.
What is the 15th SDG?
(forest)
Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss
The DRC has failed to conserve its forest as the % share of land fell:
1990 - 66.4%
2020 - 55.6%
And in recent years this has accelerated slightly
What is the 17th SDG?

Tax-to-GDP ratio. (Tax revenue / GDP)
DRC - 7.3%
Average in Africa - 16%
Too low!
–> Low tax rev = few transfer payments = cant address inequalities
