4.7 Flashcards
1
Q
What is tension
A
The pulling force exerted by a string, cable, or chain on an object
2
Q
What is a triangle of forces
A
Three forces acting at a point in equilibrium, represented by the sides of a triangle
3
Q
How are triangle of forces drawn
A
- Arrows are drawn to represent each of the 3 forces head to tail
- Triangle is closed because net force is zero and object is in equilibrium
4
Q
How can you interpret the equilibrium of an object
A
- Resultant of forces horizontally and diagonally must be equal in magnitude to the third force vertically but in the opposite direction
- Resultant force vertically must be 0 and resultant force horizontally must be 0. Therefore diagonal force can be resolved into vertical and horizontal components
- xcos° = horizontal
- xcos° = vertical
5
Q
What are coplanar forces
A
Forces that lie in the same plane
