4.6.1 Biodiversity within a Community Flashcards
What is biodiversity?
The variety within and between all forms of life.
What does biodiversity look at and take into account?
The range and variety of genes, species and habitats within a particular region.
What is biodiversity important for?
The resilience of ecosystems (allows them to resist changes in the environment).
What is ecosystem diversity?
The range of different habitats within a particular area or region.
When does an area have high biodiversity?
If there is a large number of different habitats within that area.
What is species diversity?
The number of different species and individuals of each species within one community.
What is species richness?
The number of species within a community.
When is species diversity greatest?
The greater the number of species, and the more evenly distributed the number of organisms among each species are.
When are ecosystems more stable and why?
With higher species diversity, as they are more resilient to change.
What are the reasons for maintaining biodiversity?
Ethical, ecological, economic, agricultural, environmental, and aesthetic.
