4.5.2 Chemical cells and fuel cells (might need) Paper 1 Flashcards
What is a cell
A system that contains chemicals which react and produce electricity
What effects the voltage of a cell
Different metals will react differently with the same electrolyte
The bigger the difference in reactivity of the electrodes the bigger the voltage of the cell
You can predict what the voltage of a cell might be from information about the voltages of other cells
The electrolyte used in a cell will also affect the size of the voltage
A battery is formed by connecting 2 or more cells together in series
What do fuel cells do
They use fuel and oxygen to produce electrical energy
What do fuel cells do
They use fuel and oxygen to produce electrical energy
Advantages of hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells
Dont produce as many pollutants
They store more energy
Cheaper than batteries
Disadvantages of fuel cells
Takes up more space to store than batteries
Harder to store safely
