What is a bridge header community?
The first set of people from one country (or ethnic background) to migrate to another country. They usually establish the community and settle in one area. This established community usually means that more people are willing to migrate to that area due to the familiarity.
What are some examples of cultural integration?
Places such as the Guru Nanak School in Southall and the Neasden temple show clear indications of cultural integration.
When were people originally invited to come to Britain and why?
In the postwar years (1945-1950) to help with reconstruction and railway services.
What triggered a large influx of Indian people into Britain?
The expulsion of Indians from Uganda ordered by Idi Amin
When did restrictions on migration come into force?
In the 1980s. This was when the most people were migrating into Britain as strong communities of their people had already been established.
When did we start to see affinity (a shared way of life and practice of law)?
The 1990s
How much money were people allowed to leave India with?
Three pounds!
What attracted large numbers of eastern Europeans to the UK?
Opening of EU borders.
Why did most eastern Europeans and those from former colonies move to the UK?
As economic migrants - to find work.
What model explains this migration theory?
Lee’s push-pull migration model
Give three possible pull factors for economic migrants.
London is a global hub and so you are naturally closer to work opportunities and activities. Also bridge header communities already set up would persuade you to move with them. Finally if you are within the EU or from a former colony, the move seems like an even easier option.
What are some intervening obstacles for migration to the UK?
- Not speaking English.
- Migration policies (Quotas and tier systems)
- Locals lack of tolerance to migrants and negative attitudes
What are boat people?
Those who have left a country by sea - in particular the Vietnamese refugees after the conquest of South Vietnam by North Vietnam in 1975.
