What is the Just War theory?
A
A set of accepted conditions that are used to judge whether it’s right to go to war and provide a set of rules regarding how a just war should be fought.

What do Sunni & Shi’a Muslims believe about the Just War theory?
A
- Sunni Muslims do not give it any official status although it is recognised as a central idea
- However, Shi’as recognise Jihad as one of the Ten Obligatory Acts

Why is the Just War Theory important?
A
- Provides a guide to the right way to live
- Avoids conflict
- Intended to prevent wars, complicated rules deter from war

What are the conditions for a Just War?
A
- Declared by a religious leader
- Has the support of the ummah, not just one person
- An act of defence
- Does not aim to win power, land or money
- Not done to convert others
- A last resort
- Doesn’t threaten innocent lives
- Will not harm trees, crops or animals
