A set of accepted conditions that are used to judge whether it’s right to go to war and provide a set of rules regarding how a just war should be fought.

What do Sunni & Shi’a Muslims believe about the Just War theory?

A
  • Sunni Muslims do not give it any official status although it is recognised as a central idea
  • However, Shi’as recognise Jihad as one of the Ten Obligatory Acts

  1. Declared by a religious leader
  2. Has the support of the ummah, not just one person
  3. An act of defence
  4. Does not aim to win power, land or money
  5. Not done to convert others
  6. A last resort
  7. Doesn’t threaten innocent lives
  8. Will not harm trees, crops or animals
