4.5: Components of LAN (Doshi) Flashcards
OSI Layer and devices
The higher the layer, more intelligent the devices will be.
At which OSI layer Hub and repeater operate
Hub & repeater are usually called dumb devices.
They operate at the physical layer or layer 1
At which OSI layer switch & bridge operate
Switches and bridges have more capability than hub. They operate at the Datallink layer or layer 2
At which OSI layer Routers operate
Routers have more capability than switch & bridge .They operate at the Network layer or layer 3
At which OSI layer gateway operate
They operate at the application layer or layer 7. They are the most intelligent device.
Repeater
an electronic device that receives a signal and
re-transmits it.
what are repeater used for :
Repeaters are used to extend transmissions so that the signal can cover longer distances or be received on the other side of an obstruction
Hub roles
Connect many devices together for exchange of data. Hub broadcast message to all connected devices.
Collisions occur commonly in setups using Hubs
HUB cannot learn or store MAC address
Switch
Is more advanced/intelligent version of a hub. Switch sends message to only required device.
No collusion occurs in full duplex switch
Switch store MAC addresses in a lookup up table
Bridge
contains few ports of LAN connectivity . Has the capacity to store frames and act as storage and forward devices.
Router
Connect two separate networks
