4.5 Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is the emission spectrum?
light separated into its component wavelengths
What is an atoms emission spectrum?
gives an energetic fingerprint of the element; consists of a unique sequence of bright lines that correlates to specific wavelengths and energies
What is the Bohr model of the atom?
proposes that electrons in an atom orbit the nucleus in circular paths and distance to the nucleus is related to the energy of the electrons; electrons exists at quantized energy states
What is the Quantum model of an atom?
states that electrons can only exist at discrete energy levels and there are four quantum numbers designating the shell, spin, subshell, and orbital
What is the energy shell?
(n) - analogous to the Bohr model
What is the energy subshell?
comprised of one or more orbitals and is denoted by either s, p, d, or f that describes the shape and energy of the orbital
What is an orbital?
three dimensional region around the nucleus in which the electron is most likely to be found
What does spin-paired mean?
when an electron orbital is full with its two electrons
What is the maximum amount of electrons per orbital?
two
