4.4 - nondisjunction Flashcards
nondisjunction occurs when
homologous chromosomes fail to separate during meiosis 1 or meiosis 2
trisomy
a chromosomal abnormality in which there are 3 homologous chromosomes instead of a pair of them
monosomy
1 homologous chromosome instead of a pair
nondisjunction disorders examples
down
turner
klinefelter
patau
edwards
triple x
jacob
down syndrome
trisomy (+) 21
turner syndrome
monosomy on x chromosome (XO)
klinefelter syndrome
trisomy two x and one y
patau syndrome
trisomy 13 if female
edwards syndrome
trisomy 18 if male
3 ways to test for nondisjunction
amniocentesis
CVS (chorionic villus sampling)
multiple marker screening
amniocentesis
at 15-20 weeks, cells are obtained from the amniotic sac and a karyotype is prepared
CVS
chorionic villus sampling
as early as 8 weeks, cells from the chorion that surround the embryo can be removed to make a karyotype
multiple marker screening
blood tests can be done throughout pregnancy to examine proteins and hormones that could indicate a nondisjunction disorder
2 assistive reproductive technologies
IVF
IUI
IVF
in vitro fertilization
hormones inc egg production
eggs are retrieved and fertilized by sperm in a lab then put back
