4.4 - Link Reaction Flashcards
1
Q
Where does the link reaction take place, and how does pyruvate get there?
A
The matrix of the mitochondria. By active transport.
2
Q
What is the first step of the link reaction?
A
The pyruvate is oxidised by removing hydrogen - accepted by NAD to form reduced NAD.
3
Q
What is the second step of the link reaction?
A
A 2-C molecule called an acetyl group is formed. Combines with coenzyme A. Forms acetylcoenzyme A.
4
Q
What is a byproduct released from each pyruvate?
A
A CO2 molecule.
5
Q
What is the significance of reduced NAD?
A
It’s used to synthesise ATP later on.
