4.3 - Green IT Flashcards
what is Green IT [3]
It is to use computers and IT resources [1] in an efficient way [1] to reduce carbon footprint making it more sustainable [1]
What does ‘reducing carbon footprint’ mean?
Reducing greenhouse gases / CO2
(1) by using strategies such as
recycling / turning lights off (1)
or
The (positive) impact of
organisations/individuals (1) on
the environment (1)
Explain four ways that an organisation can reduce carbon footprint. An international bank wants to improve its global image.
The bank could use Green IT to enhance its brand image.
Describe one way in which Green IT could be implemented by the bank to improve sustainability. [2]
Switch off when not in use (1) to
reduce power consumption (1).
Use power management to switch
off monitors/drives (1) to reduce
power consumption and wastage of
power (1).
Reuse in a different role (1) as part
of a sustainability programme (1).
Recycle when no longer needed (1)
donate equipment to charities, etc.
(1).
Use desktop virtualisation (1) to
reduce the costs of purchasing and
maintenance of complete computer
systems (1).
Describe two reasons why it is beneficial for a company to use Green IT
[4]
To become more sustainable by reducing the company’s carbon footprint and positively impacting the environment.
Reducing energy costs (e.g. by turning equipment off when not in use) and saving money.
Improving the public image of the organisation as people are increasingly environmentally conscious and will prefer to do business with a company that follows environmentally-friendly policies.
Why are the UNCC conferences important?
They establish obligations for countries to work towards reducing their carbon footprints and emissions of pollution.
