4.3 Coasts Flashcards
Destructive waves properties
Tall waves, high frequency, takes lots of material
Constructive wave properties
Short, low frequency
Fetch
Distance that the wind has to blow over water to reach a destination
Hydraulic action/power
Waves crash against rock and compress the air into the rocks breaking the rock over a long process
Attrition
Eroded particles in water break off each other after hitting each other and becomes smaller
Abrasion
Eroded particles (from attrition) in water scrape against the cliff and break it off
Sub aerial processes(weathering)
Changes that dont take place on the land. The breakdown of rocks where they are
3 ways of weathering
Mechanical, biological, chemical
Chemical weathering
The breakdown of rocks by changing its chemical compositions
Mechanical weathering
The breakdown of rocks without changing its chemical composition
Biological
The breakdown of rocks by living things e.g plant roots
3 types of mass movement
Slides, slumps, rockfall
Slides
Material shifts in a straight line
Slumps
Material shifts with a rotation
Rockfall
Material breaks up and falls down slope
