4.3 Flashcards
Form of energy known as electromagnetic radiation. It travels as an electromagnetic wave and travels through the vacuum of space at 300,000 km/s.
Light
Energy radiated in the form of a wave caused by an electric field interacting with a magnetic field. It is the result of the acceleration of charged particles and is categorized by wavelength and frequency.
Electromagnetic Radiation
Measured as the distance from one peak of one wave to the next wave.
Wavelength
Number of wave cycles per second. Expressed in units of hertz (Hz)
Frequency
Sunlight striking the earth’s outer atmosphere is made up of about 5% ___________, 45% __________ _______, and 50% _________ _________
ultraviolet, visible light, infrared radiation
It is the wavelengths of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum to which the human eye is sensitive.
Visible Light
Part of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum which is capable of exciting the retina and ultimately producing a visual sensation. It is the wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation to which the eye is sensitive.
Visible light
___________ is the amount of light incident (striking) on a surface.
Illuminance
__________ is how bright an object appears.
Luminance
It is the ratio of reflected light versus the light striking the surface.
Reflectance
Occurs when light is reflected off a polished or mirror-like surface
Specular reflection
It is the ratio of light transmitted through body to light illuminating surface.
Transmittance
It is the ratio of light absorbed versus the light striking the surface.
Absorptance
