4.21 - General Trends in Group 7 Flashcards
What does the term halogen mean?
Salt producer
What do all halogens exist as?
Diatomic molecules
What do their melting and boiling temperatures depend on?
The forces of attraction between molecules
What are these known as?
London forces
Are halogen molecules polar or non polar?
Non-polar
What is the trend in melting and boiling points?
They increase down the group
Why?
Because there are more electrons as you go down the group so forces increase in strength
What three factors affect electro negativity?
Nuclear charge, distance between nucleus and bonding pair, shielding effect
What is the most electronegative halogen?
Fluorine
What is the trend in reactivity down group 7?
It decreases
Why?
Because electro negativity also decreases
