4.2 - UK landscape Flashcards
What major landscape was formed in the lowlands due to post-glacial rivers and why?
The weald was formed by post-glacial rivers due to 2 anticlines being formed and rivers eroding between until it reached a rock that erodes slowly.
How did post-glacial rivers come to be?
Post-glacial rivers were essentially just meltwater from the huge glaciers that flowed downhill into the lowlands and at sea.
What is an anticline?
An anticline is when 2 rocks are pushing against each other and start to point upwards due to the continuous force.
What type of weathering process splits rock and cracks it?
Biological weathering.
How does biological weathering occur?
Biological weathering happens when animals burrow into rocks, therefore cracking and maybe splitting rock. This happens with trees growing through as well.
Why is it that in the lake district, forestry has been affected particularly?
Simply because that sheep keep eating the sapling didn’t leave the trees time to grow back fully, leaving forestry levels low.
Why is it that people in the uplands use drystone walls to mark boundaries for their farm?
Because when glaciers left, it left behind “drystone” and this is used to build farming boundaries between settlers.
