4.1 - UK landscape Flashcards
Which types of rock mainly make up the uplands?
Igneous and Metamorphic rocks
Which rock types mainly make up the lowlands?
Sedimentary rocks
What contribution did glacial processes did to shaping the UK’s land?
Glaciers made U-shaped valleys and left drystone in the north. Meltwater deposited a lot of silt with other muds and stones in the south where it melted.
What contribution did tectonic plates give to give the UK’s iconic shape?
Many plate tectonics were on a collision course and bits came off of differing, bigger lands, forming the UK as it is now.
What contribution did geology have in shaping the UK?
Different rocks came from the differing lands pushed together which formed the UK. This determined places’ altitudes.
How is Sedimentary rock formed and say whether is it permeable or not & resistant or not.
Sedimentary rock is formed by deposits laying on top of each other such as bones (which made chalk). This is permeable and not resistant.
How is Igneous rock formed and say whether is it permeable or not & resistant or not.
Igneous rocks are formed of lava / magma cooling overground / underground. This is impermeable and very resistant.
How is Metamorphic rock formed and say whether is it permeable or not & resistant or not.
Metamorphic rock is formed under heat and pressure in which different rocks pile on top of each other, getting heated and pushed together, forming a new rock.
