4.2 Systems of Linear Equations and Augmented Matrices Flashcards
Definition of a matrix
A matrix is a rectangular array of numbers written within brackets.
What is an element of a matrix?
Each number in a matrix is called an element of the matrix
What is an m x n matrix? What is the size of the matrix? What are the dimensions?
If a matrix has m rows and n columns, it is called an m x n matrix (read “m by n matrix”). The expression m x n is called the size of the matrix, and the numbers m and n are called the dimensions of the matrix.
What is a square matrix?
A matrix with n rows and n columns is called a square matrix of order n.
What is a colum and a row matrix?
A matrix with only 1 column is called a column matrix, and a
matrix with only 1 row is called a row matrix.
How is the position of an element in a matrix given? What is double script notation?
What are operations that we can do to produce Row - Equivilant matrixes?
What are the possible final matrix forms for a system of two linear equations in two variables? What do they mean?
