4.2 Study Guide Flashcards
Definition of Nitrogen Fixation
Nitrogen being turned into organic compounds in the soil and roots.
Definition of Nitrification
Converts nitrogen into nitrates and nitrites.
Definition of Denitrification
Convert nitrates and nitrites and send nitrogen back into the atmosphere
Inputs and Outputs of Photosynthesis
Inputs: CO2 H2O Energy
Outputs: Oxygen Sugars
Inputs and Outputs of Cellular Respiration
Inputs: Glucose/Sugars Oxygen
Outputs: CO2 H2O ATP (Energy)
What processes photosynthesis?
Producers
What processes Cellular Respiration?
Plants, Consumers. Bacteria, and Fungi
How are humans affecting the carbon and nitrogen cycles?
Humans are burning fossil fuels and deforesting.
How does BTB work?
When BTB interacts with a liquid containing CO2, the liquid turns yellow.
Differentiate between how energy and how carbon flow through a food chain
Carbon and Energy go the same places but energy can be lost or entered back into the atmosphere through heat.
Predict how BTB (a pH indicator) will change color in a test tube depending on Plants, Animals, or Both
A test tube will turn from blue liquid to yellow liquid when snails go through the process of cellular respiration and emit CO2 into the atmosphere. A test tube with only plants will only be able to go through the process of photosynthesis, which will extract all of the CO2 from the atmosphere and provide it with oxygen instead, keeping the liquid blue. A test tube with both will still turn yellow because the cellular respiration process overpowers photosynthesis.
Predict how BTB (a pH indicator) will change color in a test tube depending upon light or no light
If there is light going into the test tube while there are only snails, then the liquid will turn yellow because there is no plants to perform photosynthesis and extract the CO2. The same will occur with no light. If there is light going into a test tube with only plants, then the liquid will be blue because there will be no CO2 inside the test tube after photosynthesis. If there is no light, the liquid will still be blue because there is nothing to emit CO2 into the atmosphere. If there is light going into a test tube with both snails and plants then the liquid could be either color because both organisms are going through the process that changes the colors. If there is no light then the liquid would be yellow because photosynthesis cannot occur.
