4.2 study guide Flashcards
1
Q
What does the helicase do?
A
It unwinds and separates the double stranded DNA breaking the hydrogen bonds between base pairs.
2
Q
What does primase do?
A
Generates a short RNA primer on each of the template strands.
3
Q
What is the order of replication?
A
- DNA strands are separated
- RNA primer is laid down
- DNA nucleotide bases are added
- RNA primer is replaced by DNA
- Okazaki fragments are glued together.
4
Q
How can DNA only be made?
A
5’ to 3’
5
Q
What are DNA strands?
A
Antiparallel
6
Q
What direction is the leading strand of DNA polymerase moving?
A
Towards the replication fork.
7
Q
What does polymerase III do?
A
It’s the main DNA builder, and can build 1000 bases a second.
8
Q
What does polymerase I do?
A
It edits, repairs, primer removal, it can make 20 bases a second.
9
Q
What does ligase do?
A
It joins the Okazaki fragments together to form a continuous strand.
