4.2 ENERGY FLOW Flashcards
Energy Flow
Chemical energy in carbon compounds flows through food chains by means of feeding
Trophic level
The feeding level in a food web defined by the number of
energy transfers away from the original source of energy
Food chain
shows the linear feeding relationships between species in a community
Food web
A complex arrangement of interrelated food chains illustrating the flow of energy between
interdependent organisms
how is energy lost?
Biomass not absorbed
Biomass not eaten
Heat
Biomass not eaten
The chemical energy stored in parts of the organism that are
eaten (i.e. bones and feathers) does not pass to next trophic
level
Biomass not absorbed
Not all of the eaten biomass is absorbed by the consumer’s
body. Some of the biomass is egested (pooped).
Heat
Produced during cellular respiration and other metabolic reactions of the organisms in the trophic
level. Once produced, thermal energy is lost as heat to the surroundings.
Energy conversion
The process where there is a change in energy from one form to another.
The chemical energy produced by an organism can be converted into…
Kinetic energy (e.g. during muscular contractions)
Electrical energy (e.g. during the transmission of nerve impulses)
Light energy (e.g. producing bioluminescence)
Energy pyramids
a graphical representation of the amount of energy at each trophic level of a food chain
