Where does focal seizure arise?
Medial temporal lobe or inferior frontal lobe
Represents spread of seizure activity over a progressively larger region of the motor cortex;
abnormal movements begin in a very restricted such as fingers and gradually progress to include larger portion of the extremities
Jacksonian march
Localized parethesia minutes to hours in involved regions following seizure
Todd paralysis
seizure continue for hours to day and often refractory to medical therapy
epilepsia partialis continua
Type of seizure where is behavioral arrest accompanied by automatism and then anterograde amnesia or postictal aphasia
Focal seizure with dyscognitive features
Refers to involuntary behaviors likes chewing, lip smacking, picking movements of the hands or running or elaborate display of emotion
Automatism
Characterized by sudden brief lapes of consciousness without loss of postural control. Seizure typically lasts for only seconds, consciousness returns with no post ictal confusion
Typical absence seizures
Electrophysiologic hallmark of typical seizure
Generalized symmetric 3 Hz spike and wave discharge that begins and ends suddenly superimposed in normal EEG background
