421 calls that are suspicious in nature,
related to unknown trouble calls,
involve injuries due to criminal activity or
traffic accidents,

indicate a need for police involvement due to other circumstances.
What report should be done if an injured person has a potential life-threatening injury?
An ICR will be completed and photos will be taken to document details of the event if subject has a potential life threatening injury or substantial head trauma.
Define ‘natural death’.
Any of the natural disease processes of the body.

Any unforeseen or unexpected death.
Define ‘homicide’.
Taking of one life by another or an interaction by two persons in which a death occurs.

What actions will patrol officers take when determining a death to be suspicious or a homicide?
Secure the scene, obtain all contact info, request CSI section, notify homicide section, maintain security of the scene, witnesses, family, and/or suspect until relieved by Homicide personnel, complete major incident log, and separate the witnesses.
What is the supervisor’s role at the scene of homicides and suspicious deaths?
Confirm with patrol that the death appears suspicious or is a homicide, ensure CSI has been requested, and ensure Homicide has been notified.
When should an officer request CSI?(421 calls)
On all suicides, overdoses, and other deaths that are considered not natural.
What is the Dead Body Incident Report used for?
Documenting deaths, but not to be used for homicides.
What should an officer do upon arriving at the scene of a death other than homicide?
Secure the scene, gather witness information, notify the coroner’s office, and photograph the scene.
What is required for photos taken at the scene of a dead body?
Photos will be taken of the outside of structure(s), capturing address(es), the inside of structure(s), and the body. If the body is located outside, photos should be taken capturing a 360-degree view of the scene, address(es), and the body.
What must a supervisor ensure regarding the Dead Body Incident Report?
Ensure it is complete and detailed, as it may be the only documentation of the death.
What happens to personal property at the scene of a death?
It will be placed in safekeeping by the coroner investigator or public administrator, not impounded by LVMPD employees.
What is the responsibility of patrol officers regarding firearms at a death scene?
Only the firearm used in an incident will be impounded as evidence by CSA; other firearms will be the responsibility of the coroner.
Who will be notified on all child-related deaths?
The abuse/neglect LT.

What should be done if a deceased child is at a hospital?
Secure the scene and allow parents/guardians to leave only if there are no clear signs of physical abuse.
What is the definition of an in-custody death?
The death of a person under arrest, housed at CCDC, or has been contacted or detained by officers during the contact when the death occurs.
Who will be notified of all in-custody deaths?
FIT Lieutenant or designee.
