41.3 absorption in small intestine Flashcards
absorption
from lumen-> lining of alimentary canal-> body tissues -passive or active transport
villi
fingerlike projections on large folds in the small intestine
microvilli
microscopic appendages on villi
fat digestion
1) fats digested earlier are absorbed into epithelial cells 2) fatty acids and monoglycerides join to single fatty acid (in the epithelial cell) 3) then they are coated with phospholipids, cholesterol, and proteins to make chylomicrons (water soluble) 4) then they are transported into lacteal (not the capillaries b/c they are too big) 5) lacteal takes them to lymphatic system -> the heart
chylomicrons
water soluble triglycerides coated with phospholipids, cholesterol and proteins in the epithelial cells
what happens to the capillaries and veins that take the blood from the villi
-converge into the hepatic portal vein that goes to the liver -the liver 1) regulates distribution of nutrients to other tissues and organs 2) liver removes toxic stuff then blood goes to -> heart and other tissues and organs
