4.1.2 - Group 2 reactions Flashcards
What is formed when a metal from group 2 burns in oxygen?
Metal oxide
e.g Magnesium oxide (MgO)
Why does the rate of reaction with group 2 metals and chlorine increase down the group?
Atomic radii increases.
Less attraction between positive nuclei and electrons.
lose electrons more easily.
What state does chlorine have to be in to react with group 2 metals?
Gas state
What is formed when a metal reacts with chlorine?
Metal chloride
e.g Magnesium chloride (MgCl2)
What produces more effervescence in water Magnesium or Calcium?
Calcium as it’s more reactive
What is formed when a metal reacts with water?
Metal hydroxide + hydrogen gas
What is the big difference between the reaction of calcium with water and the reaction of barium with water?
Calcium hydroxide is solid as it’s only slightly soluble in water.
Barium hydroxide is aqueous as it’s soluble in water.
What is formed when magnesium reacts with steam?
Magnesium hydroxide + hydrogen
What precautions are taken when handling barium?
Store under oil
Prevent it reacting with oxygen
