4.1.1 Basic concepts of organic chemistry Flashcards
Type of bonds in alkanes.
Single Covelant bonds ( remember alk a n e s have one e therefore have single bonds)
Are alkanes saturated or unsaturated.
Saturated
General formula of alkanes
C2H(2n+2)
Name the first 10 alkanes
How do we name compounds which have side chains.
1) We first count the longest carbon chain that it has and name the alkane or alkene.
2) Then we locate the number the side chain is on by counting from the end that makes the numbering.
Another example of naming compounds which have side chains
What is meant by empirical formula
Simplest whole number ratio of element in the compound
aldehyde functional group
ends in al
Ketone
ends in one
carboxylic acid functional group
ends in oic acid
Nitrile functional group
ends in nitrile
Amine functional group
ends in amine
acyl chloride functional group
ends
in
oyl chloride
Acid anhydride functional group
ends in oic anhydride Rember it as 2 ketones joined by a O
ester functional group
ends in oate
