4.1 Waves and Vibrations Flashcards
1
Q
What is POLARISATION?
A
the process of restricting the vibrations of a transverse wave to one oscillation
2
Q
How does Polarisation occur?
A
unpolarised light is able to oscillate in infinite directions
Polaroids have a molecule arrangement that allows only one direction of oscillations to pass through due to molecule arrangement
when unpolarised light is shone on a Polaroid only light that oscillates in that direction is able to pass through
3
Q
Why cant longitudinal waves be polarised?
A
longitudinal waves oscillate ion the same direction which is directly forward
cannot be polarised as their planes of oscillation are not reduced
