4.1 Simple Harmonic Motion Flashcards
What is the definition of simple harmonic motion?
A displacement from the equilibrium fives rise to a restoring force and therefore an acceleration which is PROPORTIONAL to and in the OPPOSITE DIRECTION to the displacement from the equilibrium.
How can the conditions for simple harmonic motion be written mathematically?
a = -kx
Wha is the graph of acceleration versus displacement like for simple harmonic motion?
Straight line through the origin with a negative gradient.
What are the energy changes in simple harmonic motion?
Two types of energy transomed into one another - kinetic and potential energy. For a pendulum at extremes has maximum potential energy, at origin has maximum kinetic energy, in between has both.
