4.1 Linear Motion Flashcards
What is a scalar quantity?
- Quantities that just have size
What is a vector quantity?
- Quantities that just have size and direction
What is mass?
The quality/amount of matter the body possesses
Mass is a scalar quanitity because it does not have direction, just size
What is weight?
- The force on a given mass due to gravity
measured in Newtons
What is the calculation for weight?
Mass X Gravity= Weight
What is distance?
- Measured in meters & is the path a body takes as it moves from the starting to the finish position
Distance & displacement are used to describe the extent of a bodys motion
What is displacement?
Measured in meters & is the shortest route in a straight line between the starting & finishing position
What is speed?
- How fast the body moves
(With no reference to direction)
What is the formula for speed?
Distance/Time
What is velocity?
- Refers to how fast a body travels in a certain direction
What is the formula for velocity?
Displacement/ Time taken
What is acceleration?
- The rate of change of velocity
- When velocity increases positive acceleration occurs
- When velocity decreases, negative acceleration takes place
How do you calculate acceleration?
Change in velocity/ Time
How do you calculate the final change in velocity?
Final velocity- Initial velocity/Time
What is momentum?
- The product of the mass and velocity of an object
