4.1 Geology And UK Flashcards
Give a definition, approximate age, 3 examples and location in UK of igneous rocks
Molten lava that is cooled down and crystallised
The earths oldest rocks
Granite, Basalt and Obsidian
North and South of Tees-exe line
Give a definition, approximate age, 3 examples in UK of sedimentary rocks
Formed by sediments eroded and deposited by river/sea/sea bed
2 to 600 years
Chalk, Sandstone and Limestone
Below Tees-exe line
Compare metamorphic and igneous rock
Metamorphic is formed heat and compression
Igneous is cooled magma
Compare the formation and characteristics of granite and carboniferous limestone
Granite is formed by cooled magma with crystals like quartz
Carboniferous limestone formed from skeletons compressed
Compare the formation and characteristics of chalk and slate
Chalk is a younger form of limestone
Slate is formed by heated muds/shale
Explain when and how active volcanoes shaped the uplands of the UK

Explain how glacial erosion and deposition shaped the UK uplands
Glaciers created small valleys and turn them into u shaped valleys as the glaciers melted they deposited the mud and rocks they picked up in a pile down the end of a valley and would leave features like rivers/streams.
Explain when and how sedimentary rock was formed across the UK lowlands
250 million to 300 million years ago the UK was covered in sea and because there was so many fish when they died their skeletons fell to the bottom they got compressed and formed into rocks.
Explain how glacial deposition shaped the UK lowlands

Explain how scarp and vale topography forms in the UK lowlands
Erosion has left alternate strata of more and less resistant rock to form a landscape known as scarp and vale topography.
