4 types of Plate Boundary! Flashcards
List the 4 types of plate boundary!
- Constructive Plate Margin (Divergent)
- Destructive Plate Margin (Convergent)
- Collision Plate Margin (Convergent)
- Conservative Plate Margin (Transform)
What are constructive plate margin (divergent)
Plates are moving apart!
How do constructive plate margin (divergent) move?
Rising magma moving sideways causing friction, therefore plates move apart! As plates move apart, it creates gap and lava fills up the gap forming new land!
Are there any volcanoes on constructive plate margin (divergent)? Why?
Yes! Shield volcanoes are formed because of lava coming out of the gap!
What is destructive plate margin (convergent)?
When oceanic plate and continental plate are moving towards one another.
How do destructive plate margin (convergent) cause earthquakes?
Friction between the 2 plates causing high magnitude earthquakes
Are there any volcanoes on destructive plate margin (convergent)? Why?
Yes! Oceanic plate subducts, this creates sticky magma and results in strato volcanoes!
What is Collision Plate Margin (convergent)?
Two continental plates meet!
Are there any volcanoes on Collision Plate Margin (convergent)? Why?
No! Because there’s no subduction and no gap being created, so no volcanoes!
What happens when Collision Plate Margin (convergent) met?
The crust crumples and lifts to form fold mountains.
What is Conservative Plate Margin (Transform)
Two plates move past each other.
How do Conservative Plate Margin (Transform) trigger earthquakes?
Friction between the plates trigger earthquakes.
Are there any volcanoes on Conservative Plate Margin (Transform)
No!
